Prior to Memorial Day weekend 2013 our then 4 year old daughter, Sara, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D), a serious autoimmune disease that we and she must manage vigilantly. Every day, we and she must test her blood glucose, give her insulin and carefully count the carbohydrates in everything that she eats. We don't let T1D hold her back from doing anything, but it’s something we and she can never ignore and a disease that we wish she didn't have to experience.
Those with type 1 diabetes on average have a life expectancy of 12 less years than someone without type 1. Sara's children and her children’s children all have a much higher chance of being diagnosed with T1D. As a child with type 1 her children will be 10x more likely to be diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. We need to break this trend and find a cure!
Sara's team is fighting to cure diabetes because we believe that the research that the JDRF funds will not only find a cure for T1D but will continue to deliver better treatments that help her and millions of others live healthier and longer lives until that cure is found. All of us on Sara's team are committed and driven to fundraising for a cure and striving to raise a minimum of $10,000 this year. Sara is studying everyday at school and training everyday for the sports she is passionate about basketball, soccer, swimming, and track. Everyday is a challenge mentally,and physically for her and for everyone, and every family affected by T1D. It will be worth every day of work that she puts in to say that she reached her fundraising goal for life changing T1D research. We are so proud of her!
